New Citizen of the World

"First Steps"

Look very closely at the above picture and you'll spot the still bloody umbilical cord which recently attached this baby to the very attentive momma. This little new citizen was born on a very drizzly, rainy Sunday, March 28 between 11:30am and 12 o'clock noon. Within seconds of standing up, he nursed a little from a very full udder, and then his mother began to walk with him - I held my breath watching - the new born was keeping up very nicely, but the legs had a life of their own and were going in every direction before hitting the ground in a manner which promoted forward movement. Mom was very focused on moving him toward a "tramp shed" to get in out of the rain.

This mother is blessed with her own sense of direction, survival instinct and intuitive knowing what to do to care for that newborn and keep him alive and thriving, and she acts on her "knowing" without hesitation or thinking about alternatives. I think we've all got that instinct, that knowing --- we just need to trust more in our built in sense of direction and let go of waiting for others to tell us what is best.

Ricka, you're so right: we all have that instinct! But too often we don't trust in ourselves.
Just yesterday I thought about the need to move forward....when times are VERY hard. I was looking at some WWII pictures thinking: How come some people just don't give up...they want to survive and go on...no matter what. Sometimes I just can't understand how strong the will to live is...beyond anything I can ever imaging! Life is magic!

Happy Easter, Ricka!

Thank you Mette' - Easter Blessings to you as well!

Yes, life does get hard sometimes - worse than hard really, and it does sometimes seem that a person has to search very hard for meaning and inspiration.

I understand what you mean about the will to live through something as catastrophic as WWII, or the earthquake in Haiti ... or third world conditions we never hear about ...

I hope that my post about the survival instinct in a newborn calf doesn't appear to trivialize the need for humans to rely on the same instinct, even if we're doing it on a more "sophisticated" level ...

There was just something so moving about watching this bovine mother see to it that her baby had his chance to live ... she was so resolute about it - so patient waiting for him to stand up and nurse a little and then she nuzzled him with a sort of nudge and turned and started for shelter ... I've not been back past that particular herd, and there are so many black cows there that I'd never recognize this pair ... I'll just have to have faith that they make it!
